5k race in fort wayne

You’ve probably heard of the Turkey Trot or Galloping Gobbler 5K races, but now there’s another Thanksgiving 5K race in Fort Wayne – the Tofurky Trot 5K(ish) Run/Walk.

A Tofurky is a vegan alternative to the traditional Thanksgiving Turkey and the Tofurky Trot is a compassionate alternative to a 5K hosted by the Fort Wayne Vegans & Vegetarians Group. While traditional 5Ks race to make room to eat turkey, this race is running FOR the turkeys!

While the Trot is free to participate, they will be accepting donations to support the rescued turkeys and other animals at Uplands Peak Farm Sanctuary in Freedom, IN.

In the past, I’ve participated in Thanksgiving Day races that centered around turkeys. Being vegan and celebrating the tradition of eating a turkey doesn’t sit right with me. I thought a better option would be to organize a run that instead is centered around compassion and raising awareness for the over 46 million turkeys who have their lives taken each year at Thanksgiving. This is a good opportunity for those of any fitness level to come out, have fun, and get a little exercise while being an advocate for the animals.” says race organizer Brittany Billings.

The Tofurky Trot 5K(ish) is actually just under 2 miles. It will start near the skatepark parking lot at 10:30 am at 308 E. 4th Street and run the Greenway to Promenade Park and back. The route takes about 30 minutes to walk. Everyone of all skill levels is encouraged to participate to run, jog, or walk for the animals.

Fort Wayne has a growing vegan community,” said Heather Dahman, Vegan Lifestyle Coach and founder of Fort Wayne Vegans & Vegetarians who is dedicated to bringing awareness to the health and cruelty-free benefits of a vegan lifestyle. “We want to empower people to make a difference for the animals, the environment, and their health and what better way than with a friendly run, jog, or walk with a cause before sitting down to a cruelty-free feast!”

There will be medals, water, and vegan hot cocoa and snacks at the finish line for race participants.
